I was excited to return to my extreme sports roots today by shooting men’s halfpipe qualifications and finals. My previous experience at the Winter X Games was one of the reasons I was brought on to the Olympics in the first place, so being back at the halfpipe was comfortable territory.

Today was a pretty unremarkable day for me at the Winter Olympics, at least photo wise. I covered the men’s moguls qualification and final rounds up at the Extreme Park, and while I thought I did a solid job of covering the event, I didn’t make any artistic photos that I was happy with. I was in good spirits today, however, and enjoyed what would be considered a balmy evening by Chicago standards.

With almost a week of the Olympics routine under my belt here in Sochi, I’ve definitely started to fall into a routine. Between the shuttle bus ride to the media center, to getting gear from my locker in the press center, to eating lunch before I grab another shuttle to my venue, things tend to take on somewhat of a Groundhog Day feel with multiple day shoots like this. Throw a different venue and two completely new sports into the mix, however, and things can get shaken up pretty quickly.

Despite today (or yesterday, in actuality) being the first “official” day of competition here at the Olympics, it was everyone’s sixth day on the ground and fifth day photographing things. I think it’s safe to say that we’re all starting to feel that Olympics burn. Four to five hours of sleep per night (if you’re lucky), coupled with time for only one substantial meal a day makes even simple tasks like walking up shuttle bus stairs a chore. Did you know that you can get blisters atop existing blisters from the previous day on your feet? Yep, it’s true.
