I’m a strong believer in things being cyclical, that is, nature finding a balance for everything in life. Today, nature balanced out all those days I shot cross country skiing here at the Winter Olympics comfortably in a t-shirt by unleashing a day filled with cold temperatures, along with a constant downpour of rain and snow thrown in for good measure.

Sochi 2014: Aerial Enthusiasm

I woke up today to a text from my editor that said, “Go shoot some features if you get enthusiasm.” Translation: “Go shoot some features.” So, after grabbing a great pizza lunch with said editor and several other members of the team, myself and colleague J.D. Mercer headed out on the streets of Rosa Khutor to find some interesting subjects for photos.

Sochi 2014: Night Life

On Valentine’s Day evening, I got to trade my snow pants and crampons for my “nice jeans” (the ones not covered in mud splatters from the knee down) and the dressy shoes I forgot I packed for an assignment with USA Today on the night life of Russia. Specifically, exploring the night life of Rosa Khutor, the neighborhood myself and many other Olympics journalists as well as athletes are lodging in here in the mountain cluster.

Sochi 2014: Full Moon Rising

When we arrived here on the ground in Russia just under two weeks ago, one of the things we were told to keep in mind was the full moon occurring on February 14th. Photographers on our team were encouraged to come up with ideas that would place the moon in some visual context with the Olympics. Of course, the famous Olympics rings are the obvious first choice for this kind of thing.
