Freedom Of Flight

AeroShell Aerobatic Team pilot Steve Gustafson of Tallulah, La., flies a World War II era AT-6 Texan aircraft in a formation over Lake Michigan near Marquette Park Beach in Gary, Ind., during the Gary South Shore Air Show, Saturday, July 10, 2010. This image was shot with a Go Pro Hero HD camera mounted to the wing, set to capture a still image once every two seconds.

Far in the distance, though the hazy blanket of hot summer night air, they greet my eyes as shimmering, golden orbs far on the horizon. A rising planet? A star? Something from beyond our solar system? I start to get nervous, “This might be it, Guy, remain calm.” With my eyes now keenly fixed on the target, the shimmering golden color begins to ascend into a brilliant white as the orb rises higher into the sky. OK, it’s not a star, definitely not a planet

I love it! Were you a writer in another life? :)

  2. Guy,
You did an AMAZING job covering this event. In fact, it looks like you had more fun than the spectators.
Please keep posting images like this to your blog, very educational…

  3. This is truly outstanding work. I am amazed at the quality of images you were able to produce with the GoPro camera. The Post-Tribune is lucky to have a talented shooter like yourself on staff.

  5. Guy,
do you have a photo of the mount that you used on the end of the wing?
    Thanks

I’ve never seen so many excellent photographs of an air show and found this story to be a very enjoyable read!! I’ve watched many air shows, but particularly enjoy this one, because of the location directly on a Great Lake. The boats, the dunes, the people and the planes make this show a very pleasant spectacle. Somehow, the weather never seems to fail… Your photographs give me a whole new appreciation for the South Shore Air Show!! Thank you for these spectacular shots of the people in the show as well as the aerial shots of the beautiful lake front in Gary, Indiana. Fabulous!!!
